New! New FDA Rules Target Foodborne IlLnesses
As part of the new 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, the FDA has come out with a couple new regulations that will most likely get rid of 1.25 million diseases coming from foods. Every year, about 128,000 people are hospitalized because of food illnesses and close to 3,000 people die. Instead of reacting, the FDA is deciding to act and prevent these numbers from increasing slowly. One of the rules requires companies to be standardized scientifically with the paths of the contamination of their foods. The other new rule makes sure each food company has a plan if a person gets food poisoning. According to the article, people were very approving of the new rules. So FDA feels like they did some good in the world. They plan to continue coming out with new rules as needed.
The FDA is a very important part to human survival. They help mankind stay healthy when it comes to food. Before the FDA existed, people got sick regularly. Meat, especially, was not regulated. Unclean parts of animals were thrown in the cut costs. These issues were brought to the public by the famous book, The Jungle. Without wanting to, the author changed the world. How cool is that?

New! 9/11- Terror in the dust: Increased risk for 3 Cancers
Eleven years after the 9/11 tragedy, researchers have discovered new progressions in both prostate and thyroid cancer for rescue and recovery workers who saved lives in the chaos. Scientists have noted that they were the ones most exposed to the debris, dust, and fumes the falling Twin Towers caused. The Journal of American Medical Association has conducted a study to find out exactly how these heroes and heroines have acquired such unfortunate and undeserving diseases. The researchers are really concerned about the possibility of "complex mixtures", meaning real-life factors that happen out of nowhere, such as 9/11. The rescue/recovery workers were immediately exposed to harsh metals and other pollutions. Lung cancer is also a major issue in a future that doesn't look too bright for these heroes.
It's depressing to think that the people who helped to save so many lives and work to rebuild the city are being punished with these awful diseases. Instead they should be rewarded with good health the rest of their lives, but things don't always work that way. Health is a funny thing. It picks the most random people to hurt; usually, it choses the most undeserving people.

7 Billion and Still Growing: Explosive Population Growth Might Have Helped Us Displace Neandertals
The human population stands at over 7 billion right now. In the next 39 years, there are supposed to be some major changes in the big countries. India will have more people than China, going from 1.24 billion to 1.69 billion, in 2050. China, on the other hand, will shrink from 1.35 billion to 1.3 billion. And Africa's population is said to double in size. Life expectancy will rise from age 69 to 76. By 2050, 69 percent of the world's 9.3 billion will live in an urban setting. Some scientists believe that because of our population booms, we were able to take the future from the Neandertals, of whom died out quickly and quietly as soon as education came around. The future is unclear, though, and some important factors that may cause the population to change would be disease, war, scientific advance, political change, and our capacity for global cooperation. Only time will tell.
It's incredible to realize that people can predict the future with the past, even something as unpredictable as population. It's interesting to hear that researchers think India will not only surpass China, but China will also shrink. I wonder why they think that. Perhaps China will experience new government, or people are dying faster? On another note, Africa is said to double, which I found interesting as well. Maybe researchers thought their wars would stop, they would start urbanizing, and maybe there wouldn't be as much death.

Nigeria Tested by Rapid Rise in Population
In only 25 years, Nigeria holds 300 million people, roughly the amount of people in the United States. Nigeria is about the size of Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada squished together. The people are packed together, in "Face me, Face you" housing, which is named that because whole families are squeezed in 7-by-11-foot rooms. Typically 50 people are forced to share a kitchen, and bathroom. Oh, and the pipes no longer carry water. At the local school, 100 students jam themselves into a classroom, two to a desk. The unemployment rate is up to 50 percent now, and teenagers and young adults are leading the country in crime and discontent. Population is growing faster than economic expansion and the United Nations is threatening to step in. The Nigerian government is encouraging smaller families as key to economic salvation. They are trying to build infrastructure but can't keep up. Because of the unemployment rates, the youth, with little hope, has joined the radical Islamist group Boo Haram, which has destroyed more than a dozen churches and schools at the beginning of this year. The population means more illegal immigration, also. There are up to 400,000 undocumented Africans in the U.S. The UN estimates that the global population will stop at 10 billion in 2100, assuming that declining birthrates will eventually have a global average of two children per woman.
I was surprised to find out that Nigeria has approximately the same amount of people in our country! It's crazy to think that they are all living in barely 15 percent of the U.S. And in poverty and disgusting conditions to boot. I would hate that, and wouldn't be able to handle it, either. I mean, imagine living with 50 people. I get cramped just living with five!
